November 2016: "Medical Interventions of the Future"
From personalised medicine to immunotherapy to robotic surgery, this conference looked at how medicine has progressed over the past few years, where these advances are leading to in the next decade or so, and most importantly, how they will impact upon us in the not-so-distant future. We are not only approaching an era of longer life expectancy but also a life with more years spent in older age and with illness and disability. With more humans populating our world than ever before, including a sizeable proportion of centenarians, how can the medical field with advances in its technology tackle the double burden of disease on a global scale?
This conference explored these challenges as well as showcase some of the significant technological advances in medicine and surgery being discovered and developed right here, right now in the UK. In a day dedicated to close interaction with experts the field, students had the opportunity to discuss important ethical issues for medical research during our Question Time panel discussion chaired by Prof Tim Elliott, as well as participate in a range of small group workshops, and present their own research.
