INSPIRE is a nation-wide initiative coordinated by the Academy of Medical Sciences and funded by the Wellcome Trust which aims to enthuse medical students about research and encourage them to pursue research in their future careers. Southampton Inspire Academic Society (SIAS) is our local branch which provides medical students with the opportunity to engage in research from an early stage. We are fully supported by the Faculty of Medicine, and our academic leads are Prof Anneke Lucassen and Prof Karen Walker-Bone.
SIAS oversees a number of programmes within Southampton Medical School, including monthly journal clubs, intended to encourage students ability to think critically about research; our 'How to Approach Research and Clinical Academia' educational series; regular peer-taught revision sessions, a medical book club, and frequent opportunities to present student research.
Finally, we are immensely proud of our long tradition of hosting large national conferences. These have included our National Undergraduate Nutrition Summit in November 2015, the National Undergraduate Cancer Research Conference in November 2016, and the Medical Interventions of the Future Conference in November 2017. Additionally, we also frequently collaborate with other academic medical societies on events such as the National Undergraduate Cardiovascular Conference in February 2016, and the Insight into Obstetrics and Gynaecology conference in December 2018.
